Radon Testing

Dangers of Radon

Radon is a radioactive gas that results from the uranium naturally breaking down in rocks, soil, and water. According to the Office of the Surgeon General, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the country. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also reported that Radon has resulted in approximately 21,000 deaths annually.

Importance of Radon Testing

Once released from uranium, Radon gas can contaminate the air and water entering the structure via cracks and holes in the foundation or through the well. This odorless gas can get trapped inside houses and buildings. Typically, a Radon test must run for a minimum of 48 hours.   The EPA recommends testing your home every few years. The PA Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) has found that approximately 40% of Pennsylvania homes that have been tested have elevated Radon levels.    Elevated Radon gas levels has been reported in all 67 Pennsylvania counties.

Our Radon Testing Service

We are Certified to professionally conduct Radon tests in Pennsylvania.  The PA DEP requires Certified Radon testers to strictly follow rigorous Quality Control and Quality Assurance guidelines. When you turn to us for Radon testing service, you will benefit from:

  • Testers that are PA DEP Certified
  • Testers that use state of the art equipment
  • Same day results upon device retrieval
  • Testing is offered separately or combined with a Home Inspection

How We Conduct Radon Tests

Radon detection devices, such as the electret ion chamber, are set in the lowest space that can be inhabited while all exterior doors and windows are kept closed. After at least 48 hours, the devices are retrieved and the radon level, measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L), is determined.

Ideal Radon Levels

According to the EPA, Congress has set a long-term goal for indoor Radon levels to be less than the average 4.0 pCi/L (pico curies per liter). In 2009, the World Health Organization has suggested that the national annual average concentration of Radon should be at 2.7 pCi/L (pico curies per liter).  As a homeowner, you should test your home to ensure the safety of your family every few years.

Levels That Require Immediate Action

For Radon levels of 4.0 pCi/L and above the EPA recommends installing a Radon Mitigation System in a house or building.

Radon Mitigation

The PA DEP recommends that a Radon Mitigation System be installed by a PA DEP Certified Mitigation company. In addition to sealing cracks or openings in the foundation, Radon reduction systems involve vent pipes and fans that transfer Radon from the soil straight to the air outdoors. The systems are easily installed and cost effective when considering the overall benefit to your family.  The DEP recommends that you test your home every few years to ensure that the mitigation system is operating properly.  We offer follow up testing to Home Owners once the system is installed.
